Planning Your 2027 Egypt Eclipse Trip: A Practical Guide

When to book, where to sleep, and how to build Cairo, Abu Simbel and the Red Sea around eclipse day - a practical guide from a team based in Egypt.

You have decided: you will be in Egypt for the total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027. Good decision. Now comes the part that actually determines whether the trip works — the planning. This is the practical guide, written by a team on the ground in Egypt.

The order to plan things in

Most trips are planned flights-first. For eclipse week, reverse it:

  1. Secure where you will be on 2 August first. Everything else can flex; the eclipse cannot. If you are new to the where question, start with where to see the 2027 eclipse in Egypt.
  2. Then build the Egypt itinerary around it — Cairo, Abu Simbel, the Red Sea all fit either side of eclipse week.
  3. Book flights last, once the ground arrangement is confirmed.

When to book

Now, frankly. This is not the usual travel-industry urgency line. Luxor is a small city, its bed count is fixed, and 2 August 2027 is drawing demand from far outside the normal Egypt travel market — eclipse chasers plan years ahead as a matter of course. Cruise cabins for the date are allocated in booking order. The travellers who move early choose their vessel, deck and cabin; late bookers take what is left, at whatever it then costs.

Where you will sleep: the hotel problem and the river answer

Hotels in Luxor will be the pressure point of eclipse week. A Nile cruise sidesteps the problem elegantly — your accommodation travels with you, meals are aboard, and the classic Luxor–Aswan route delivers Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae either side of the big day. Our 2027 eclipse cruise departures were built precisely for this: 30 July from Aswan, 31 July from Luxor, both placing you in the Luxor area for 2 August.

Building the bigger trip

  • Cairo & the Pyramids — two to three days, before or after. Do not try to squeeze it into eclipse week itself.
  • Abu Simbel — simple to add from Aswan, which is where the 5-day sailing ends.
  • The Red Sea — Hurghada is the natural decompression after the temples.
  • Hotels either side — book your pre- and post-cruise nights as part of the same plan, not as an afterthought in the busiest week Luxor has seen in years.

What it will cost

Honest answer: pricing for the eclipse departures is being confirmed with the cruise operators now, and it depends on vessel, cabin category and occupancy. We quote per enquiry rather than publishing a number that would be wrong by the time you read it. Early enquiries are answered first as rates are released.

Is Egypt an easy place to do this?

With the right operator, yes. Egypt runs one of the oldest tourism industries on Earth; the Luxor–Aswan corridor handles millions of travellers a year. The things that make eclipse week different — demand, timing, logistics on the day — are exactly the things a local team absorbs for you. That, more than anything, is the argument for booking with people who are physically in the country.
