Eclipse 2027 in Egypt: A Planning Guide for Tour Operators

Planning eclipse groups for 2 August 2027: why Luxor, how to structure eclipse day, supplier terms, heat and eye safety. A guide for tour operators.

On 2 August 2027 a total solar eclipse crosses southern Egypt, and Luxor sits close to the centre of its path. For tour operators it is the most-requested Egypt departure of the decade, and it runs on supplier deadlines that are tighter than any normal season. This guide is written for operators and group organizers planning eclipse groups, by a licensed ground operator based in Egypt.

Eclipse 2027 Egypt group tours: what tour operators need to know

The total solar eclipse is on 2 August 2027. Totality over Luxor lasts about 6 minutes 23 seconds. Maximum eclipse in Luxor is at about 13:05 local time. It is the longest total eclipse visible from easily accessible land this century. Beds, cabins and flights for that week are limited, and suppliers ask for full, non-refundable payment early.

The rest of this guide covers where to base a group, how to structure the days, what suppliers will ask of you, and the mistakes that cost operators the event.

Why Luxor is the base for eclipse groups

Luxor combines the eclipse with the infrastructure a group needs. It has an international airport, hotels, Nile cruise ships and the West Bank temples. Totality there lasts about 6 minutes 23 seconds. The point of greatest duration lies roughly 60 km south-east of Luxor, in the desert, and adds only a few seconds.

For a background explainer you can share with your travelers, see our guide to where to see the 2027 eclipse in Egypt.

Should a group chase the centre line in the desert?

We advise against it for most groups. The centre line adds a few seconds of totality. It costs a long desert convoy in August heat, with no shade, no facilities and no fallback if a vehicle fails. A controlled site in the Luxor area gives almost the same experience with far less risk.

Specialist astronomy groups may still want the line. If so, plan it as an expedition, with vehicles, water, shade and medical cover, not as an add-on to a cultural tour.

Where will the group actually watch the eclipse?

The exact viewing arrangements will be confirmed closer to the date. The authorities manage access to sites during major events, so nobody can promise a specific location today. Plan for two possibilities: viewing from a cruise ship's deck, or from a reserved site on land in the Luxor area. Tell your travelers that the final location is confirmed nearer the time.

How to structure an eclipse group's days

Put the group in Luxor the night before the eclipse and schedule no travel on the morning of 2 August. That single rule protects the whole trip. A train delay, a road closure or a missed flight on eclipse morning cannot be recovered, because the event lasts minutes and does not repeat.

  • Day before: arrive in Luxor, check in, brief the group on timing and eye safety.
  • Eclipse day: a relaxed morning, transfer to the viewing position well ahead of the partial phase, totality around 13:05 local time, then rest.
  • Day after: sightseeing or onward travel, when roads and airports are under less pressure.

Keep the rest of the itinerary flexible around that fixed point. Cairo and Giza, Abu Simbel and the Red Sea all fit before or after eclipse week. Our group logistics guide covers how those pieces connect.

Is a Nile cruise or a hotel better for an eclipse group?

A Nile cruise solves the hardest problem of eclipse week, which is beds in Luxor. The accommodation travels with the group, meals are on board, and the classic route between Luxor and Aswan delivers the main temples either side of the eclipse. Hotels work too, but Luxor's bed count is fixed and eclipse demand comes from far outside the normal Egypt market.

We operate two 5-star eclipse sailings timed so groups are in Luxor on 2 August:

  • 30 July – 2 August 2027: Aswan to Luxor, 4 days / 3 nights.
  • 2 – 6 August 2027: Luxor to Aswan, 5 days / 4 nights.

Both are full board. Abu Simbel and domestic flights are added separately. Trade partners can request the agent program, which carries no prices; rates are quoted on application.

What will suppliers require for eclipse week?

Expect full payment at confirmation, and expect it to be non-refundable. Ships and hotels are selling their scarcest week, and they set the terms. For our eclipse sailings, the terms are 100% payment to confirm, in US dollars by bank transfer, strictly non-refundable, with bank charges paid by the sender.

Build those terms into your own booking conditions before you sell, and recommend travel insurance to every traveler.

When should operators book eclipse space?

Now, for groups. Cabins and beds for eclipse week are allocated in booking order, and early operators choose the ship, the deck and the cabin mix. Domestic flights to and from Luxor around 2 August will be among the most contested of the year. Hold group seats as soon as your numbers are firm.

How hot is Luxor in August?

Very hot. Midday temperatures in Luxor in August regularly exceed 40°C (104°F). Plan sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon, keep the group hydrated, and give the middle of the day to rest. Shade and water at the viewing position matter more than a few extra seconds of totality.

What eye protection do travelers need?

Every traveler needs certified solar viewing glasses for the partial phases. Glasses should meet the ISO 12312-2 standard. Only during totality itself is it safe to look at the eclipse without protection. Branded glasses also make a good welcome gift for a group.

Common mistakes operators make with eclipse groups

  • Travelling on the morning of the eclipse. One delay and the group misses it.
  • Selling a fixed viewing location that nobody can yet guarantee.
  • Waiting for final numbers before holding beds and seats.
  • Applying normal cancellation terms to a product whose suppliers are non-refundable.
  • Treating the eclipse as a normal summer departure, without heat planning.

Planning eclipse departures with a ground partner

We are a licensed Egyptian ground operator: Ministry of Tourism licence no. 547, issued 27 February 1985, Category (A). We handle the full ground side of an eclipse group: arrivals, Egyptologists, cruise cabins, transfers and eclipse-day logistics. US partners are invoiced in US dollars, and our trade programs start at 8 travelers per group.

US operators can read how we run groups for US partners, with our ground operation in photos. Operators elsewhere can see our DMC services for travel agencies. To request the eclipse agent program, apply for a trade account; we reply within 24 hours.
